FIRE RISK ASSESSMENTS
The Legal Requirement
Unless your building is used solely as a single private dwelling (house), you require a Fire Risk Assessment.
Who Can Do It?
This is a good question
There is no formal qualification required as the legislation simply states that it should be carried out by someone who has “sufficient knowledge, training, and other qualities”.
If the layout of your premises is simple, or you have a reasonable amount of competence, you may choose to do it yourself, or you may select a non fire safety specialist, as many do. You can obtain the Government’s guidance documents online and free of charge at www.communities.gov.uk.
If you require a little more support, you could obtain some training – we provide courses via various training providers, including the Construction Study Centre www.constructionstudycentre.co.uk.
However, if your premises is large and/or complex, or you want to be sure that your Assessment is ‘suitable and sufficient’ and any money spent on compliance is actually necessary and spent wisely...
…choose a competent qualified professional
Many premises should only be assessed by an experienced and suitably qualified person as they are often too large, complex, or hazardous for a lay person or non fire safety specialist. We specialise in this work.
We provide highly professional Fire Risk Assessments to discerning clients throughout the UK, including the Channel Islands.
“The Senior Fire Officer said ‘the report was the best example they had seen’ and has forwarded to the national group as an example of best practice. Impact Fire are not the cheapest – but are certainly the best we have used.”

Martin Thomas, Head of Property, Admiral Taverns
“Excellent service provided by qualified professionals.”

Iain Will, Facilities Manager UK & USA, Interoute Communications Limited
Our Process
Our Assessments are carried out by competent and experienced assessors. The choice of assessor will be determined by the premises to be assessed. We match the expertise required for a particular assessment to the skills held within our team. This is particularly important for high risk industrial sites, transport systems, and places of public entertainment. We have specialist assessors for each of these areas.
Our technical manager vets each assessment to ensure that you get a report that:
- Is technically correct and appropriate for the type and size of your premises.
- Does not have recommendations that would incur unnecessary costs for you. We do not sell extinguishers, fire alarms, fire doors or anything else – so our fees are based on the cost of doing the assessment without any expectation of selling you other products or services. If you don’t need it, there is no incentive for our Assessment to recommend it – so you can be confident that we won't.
- Provides guidance on the importance of each recommendation.
- Includes a commentary where this will assist the responsible person to understand the issues raised.
- Gives you basic documentation where this is missing, such as Notices and Procedures.
- Leaves you satisfied, safe, legally compliant, and convinced that choosing us, a leading consultancy with ISO 90001 Quality accreditation, rather than what might
have first appeared to have been a cheaper option, was the right choice!
