FIRE SAFETY ENGINEERING

Background

If you want a design that cannot be accommodated using the prescriptive guidance, you should speak to us about using an ‘alternative approach’ supported by a Fire Engineered solution.

All buildings constructed in the UK must satisfy the requirements of the Building Regulations with respect to fire.

Historically, this has been achieved by following the recommendations contained in Approved Document B (Fire Safety) or other appropriate guidance. By following the guidance provided in these documents, your design will be ‘deemed to satisfy’ the legislation. However, as they provide what is generally known as ‘Prescriptive Guidance’, your proposed design may not be achievable – and this is where we can help you.

What is Fire Engineering?

The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) defines Fire Engineering as:

“The application of scientific and engineering principles, rules, codes, and expert judgement, based on an understanding of the phenomena and effects of fire and the reaction and behaviour of people to fire – to protect people, property, production, and the environment from the destructive effects of fire.”

Our fire engineers are members of the IFE and keep up-to-date with developments by undertaking Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Indeed, we are frequently the providers of such training for other professionals.

What can we achieve for you by applying the science of fire engineering to your project?

The main benefit is Design Freedom – allowing you more choice in the construction design, and management of your building.

As this relatively new discipline develops, it is possible to design ever more ambitious buildings, including the use of new materials and building methods.

Most of our work in this area involves atria or floor layouts that require a fire engineering strategy to ensure that the proposed design will be safe, as well as cost effective.

Demands for a more sustainable environment have introduced us to new concepts in building construction such as the design of multi-storey buildings constructed entirely of timber, and inner city buildings incorporating ‘green roofs’.

Whatever challenge your project presents, our fire engineers will work with you to find the right solution.
